Being a mature single I signed in to a dating website recently and was welcomed by a huge, flashing message.
It assured that if I took time to respond to a sequence of questions that they'd find a "perfect match" for me. Imagine that? All the work and worry of being single - gone. Not only can computer programs manage the whole traffic system of a city and make chess grandmasters cry, but now they can lead my perfect match right to my stoop. I would have liked a Stepford better half, I Am hoping it comes assembled. The current trend in web Dating has been the use of a "computer character test" of some particular kind. Sites claim that these tests, often developed by a "top psychologist", have the power to understand you and your wishes through a collection of questions. Confused? Lost in love? Issues communicating? Don't fret, the Net Dating Hal 5000 can figure you out.
Actually when you are done, this COMPUTER programme will know your requirements and desires better than you do. Remember the Broadway play "Fiddler on The Roof"? You won't, it was actually the 1st Broadway play I went to when I was seven. A song that usually stuck in my head for who knows what reason was "matchmaker, wedding broker, make me a match" The track starts as a plea to the wedding broker to bring true love direct to the altar ; someone striking, rich, clever, and perfect.
But by the end of the track, the crooner realizes the Wedding Broker won't be up to the task. She decides that "playing with matches, a girl can get burned".
Actually , extremely smart fellows with names like Freud, Maslov, Fromm, and Jung developed respected psychological ideas, and these concepts are used as the base for each type of tests. "The Enormous five" concept suggests that there are 5 dimensions of character : openness to experience, conscientiousness, extroversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. Some well-liked character tests use this as a foundation.
Others go the "Big three" route, which does away with the "openness" and "agreeableness" dimensions - frequently because it's better to remember. I joke a touch about these hypotheses, but the reality is that they have survived the passage of time and there's a ton of systematic research behind them. The $64000 question is if these tests can be productive in trying an idea to the intricacy of a homo sapien. Add to this the extra layer of meshing your answers with another, similarly complicated person. People have rash behaviour that simply cannot be measured when they are sitting, relaxed and introspective, taking one of those tests. Whether or not we are trying hard to be truthful, our rash behavior in real world circumstances can be far different than we might expect.
We're going to meet someone who's empirically good-looking, has an analogous background, is kind and successful and yet we are not attracted. Continually we can't say why we like somebody else. It may be how they make us laugh, a crooked smile even how they smell. Often small things that are immeasurable all alone can jointly make us attracted. Humans and our feelings and wishes are far too difficult, and a P. C. Programme can't resolve the riddles of our romantic lives. As Jung put it, "the meeting of two characters is the same as the contact of two chemicals ; if there's a reaction both are transformed".
