Does painting a house dark colors save money on utilities?
Does it save money in the summer on the A/C bill, or in the winter on the heating bill? Neither, or both? I just painted my house a dark clay (gray) and dark green trim. My friend told me that it will save on utilities, but my neighbor said that I will pay more in the summer months. I'm confused....
catsovermen - So would that mean just the opposite would happen with a light colored house? It would cost more to heat it, but wouldn't take much to cool it off?
Theoretically dark colours attract the sun and light colour don't...but when it comes to houses (in a winter cold and summer heat), you will not notice a difference if your home is properly insulated. There are way too many variables to this..roofing material, location, direction of house, insulation, windows, etc..it goes on and on. Just enjoy the new colours of your home and don't worry about the neighbour who likes to listen to himself talk too much.
