Scholarships In Science And Technology Bring Success In Distance Learning Degree Programs

Students from St. Lucia and throughout the world have a better chance at becoming the next Bill Gates or Marie Curie. Monster Worldwide, the global parent company for the monster.com employment site, and the Society of Black Engineers recently announced extending scholarships to students in Europe, Canada and the Caribbean. The Society of Black Engineers scholarship offering was part of a partnership between the organization, a Midwestern technical institute and the charitable fund, Goldman Sachs Gives.

The scholarships are to be applied to science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM, degrees, which are offered through campus and online college, university and technical school programs. STEM degrees online and on campus are varied and can lead to careers that the US Bureau of Labor Statistics expects to experience faster employment growth than other occupations – those who create and maintain computer networks that, in the healthcare industry, might help patient monitoring, for instance, or those who design and develop products such as automated insulin injectors. Students might also consider campus or online degree offerings in STEM-related areas such as environmental science and environmental engineering that might lead to work securing drinking water resources or minimizing the effects of climate change.

National Society of Black Engineers National chair Calvin Phelps in the society's scholarship announcement expressed happiness in the ability to help students who are hungry for an education. Phelps also suggested that partnerships such as the society's involving Goldman Sachs Gives and the Midwestern technical institute are a good direction. Monster Worldwide Corporate Philanthropy Vice President Lewis Karabatsos in this organization's scholarship announcement cited that "having well-qualified individuals in these disciplines to fill the career pipeline is critically important to the future not only of our country and our industry, but also of the world."

American citizens interested in pursuing campus or online degrees in STEM subjects might also find scholarship opportunities available from the Society of Black Engineers and Monster Worldwide. Science, math, technology and engineering scholarships can greatly offset the cost of tuition for campus and online degree programs. Students seeking math, science, technology and engineering scholarships might consider:

Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship Program: This scholarship program, named for the late US Senator Barry Goldwater, each year provides 300 sophomores or juniors pursuing careers in math, the natural sciences or engineering as much as $7,500. Scholarship money can be applied to tuition, fees, books, room and board. Candidates must be nominated by their institution. To be eligible, a student must maintain a “B” or equivalent grade point average and be in the upper quarter of his or her class.

Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering & Math: Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering & Math are intended for academically talented students with financial needs. These particular scholarships are administered through the financial aid offices of colleges, universities and technical schools that are granted National Science Foundation assistance to provide them. The scholarships are geared to students who want to work toward completing associate or bachelor's degree programs in science and engineering disciplines and enter careers. Graduate students studying science and engineering are also eligible.

Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology: High school students each year can enter research projects in this competition that provides $1,000 to $100,000 in scholarship money. The Siemens Foundation offers the program, and the College Board administers it. Those who win the scholarship competition at the regional level move on to national finals.

Science, math, technology and engineering scholarships such as these can often be applied to online course programs, as well as campus-based offerings in instances where colleges, universities and technical schools are accredited by a nationally recognized agency. Like online degree programs that are often associated with flexibility, science, math, technology and engineering scholarships can for many make a college, university and technical school education in STEM studies more accessible. Whatever a student's background and whichever education format students choose for STEM studies, they might expect promising opportunities after obtaining their degree in science.
